El MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging), MENSAJERO en español, una nave espacial de la NASA que sobrevuela Mercurio por segunda vez en este año, ha revelado territorio nunca visto de este planeta, el más interior del sistema solar. La sonda ha generado varias primicias científicas, y está enviando cientos de nuevas fotografías y mediciones de la superficie del planeta, de su atmósfera y de su campo magnético.
La nave llegó a Mercurio el 6 de octubre, terminando una etapa crítica que le permitirá, ayudándose de la gravedad del planeta, el ponerse en órbita alrededor de Mercurio en el año 2001. Durante este sobrevuelo, la nave descubrió un 30% de superficie del planeta nunca vista antes, superior incluso a la de Sudamérica. Las nuevas fotografías parecen apuntar, entre otras, a diferencias entre la distribución de los cráteres de Mercurio y los de la Luna y Marte.
MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) a NASA Spacecraft gliding over the surface of Mercury for the second time this year, has revealed more previously unseen territory on the innermost planet of the solar system. The probe also has produced several science firsts, and is returning hundreds of new photos and measurements of the planet's surface, atmosphere and magnetic field.
The spacecraft flew by Mercury in Oct. 6, and completed a critical gravity assist to keep it on course to orbit Mercury in 2011. During this fly-by it also unveiled 30 percent of Mercury's surface never before seen by a spacecraft, bigger than the land area of South America. The new MASSENGER's images, seem to point towards differences amongst the craters of Mercury of those form the Moon or Mars.
